Luton

Great Wall Steed
* See the Top 20 All-brands ranking by clicking on the title! *
Whereas the UK Passenger Cars market lodged a shiny 5% growth last year, new Light Commercial Vehicle sales were not so lucky and are down 8% year-on-year to 239,641 registrations. At this stage only a brands ranking is available but I will update this post if and when models data comes through. There should be no surprises in pole position with the Ford Transit taking the lead for the 48th consecutive year, especially with the all-new Transit Custom hitting dealership at the end of the year.
But the main event on the LCV market this year in the country is the arrival of Chinese brand Great Wall with the Steed pick-up. After 9 month the model had registered 338 units in the country, and the Full Year total comes at 476 sales and 0.2% share, placing the brand at #15, below Isuzu (2,762), equal with Renault Trucks (476) and above Hyundai (379). So still a very small footprint for the giant Chinese carmaker, and the December score was at a feeble 18 units and 0.2% share, so 2013 will be interesting to follow…

The UK new car market is the only one in Europe’s Top 5 to gain ground year-on-year in 2012, up a shiny 5% to 2,044,609 registrations, the highest annual tally since 2008. The market lodges year-on-year growth for 11 out of 12 months this year, a performance in stark contrast with the rest of Europe. Thanks to sales up 14% to 109,265 units, the Ford Fiesta is the most popular model in the country for the 4th year in a row and the 9th time overall after 1990, 1991, 1996 to 1998 and 2009 to 2011, to be compared with the Escort’s 12 years and the Cortina’s and Focus’ 10 years at #11. The Fiesta topped the UK monthly ranking 8 times in 2012.
Vauxhall Corsa
The Vauxhall Corsa is up one spot and 15% to #2 with 89,434 units and 4.4%, its highest year-end ranking since 2008. It even ranked #1 in May for the first time since October 2008. The Ford Focus is up a shy 2% to 83,115 sales and 4.1% but is down to #3, still struggling to regain its prior form (the model was #1 in the UK for 10 consecutive years from 1999 to 2008) but managing to top the monthly ladder 3 times in 2012. Boosted by a fantastic month of December (#2), the Vauxhall Astra is back up one spot to #4, passing the VW Golf at #5.
Mercedes C-Class
However the most significant event in the UK Top 10 in 2012 is the 6th place of the locally-produced Nissan Qashqai, up a formidable 3 ranks and 16% on 2011 to a record 45,675 units and 2.2%. This is the highest year-end ranking ever reached by a Japanese model in the UK, beating the #8 spot hit by the Datsun Cherry in 1981. The annual volume record for a Japanese model in the UK however still belongs to the Nissan Micra: 54,175 sales in 1989. Finally, let’s salute the 9th place of the Mercedes C-Class with 37,261 units (+24%), breaking into the year-end UK Top 10 for the very first time and hitting a record #6 in September.
In the brands ranking, Ford leads ahead of Vauxhall while BMW maintains its premium leadership at a fantastic 4th place with 127,530 sales (+9%) ahead of Audi at 123,622 (+9% also). The biggest gainers in the Top 20 are Hyundai up 18% to #10, Kia up 24% to #12, Skoda up 19% to #14, Fiat up 20% to #16 and Land Rover up 29% to #17. Notice also Renault down 40% and 7 spots to #18, Porsche up 25%, Bentley up 22% and MG up 177% to a still shy 782 sales.

Another very satisfying month for new car sales in the UK, bucking the gloomy European trend once again and up 4% year-on-year in December to 123,557 registrations. This brings the Full Year 2012 total to 2,044,609 units, the highest since 2008. December is always heavily influenced by fleet sales in the UK and this year is no exception, with the models ranking getting a bit of a shake. The Ford Focus manages to take the lead for the 2nd consecutive month, the third time this year and only the 5th time in the last 3.5 years after May 2010, January 2011, February and November 2012. It sells 5,265 units for a 4.3% share.
Vauxhall Astra
The Vauxhall Astra is up 3 spots on November to land in an excellent 2nd place with 5,112 sales and 4.1%, its highest ranking in the UK in 2 years, since December 2010 when it ranked #1. The Ford Fiesta is kicked down to #3 at 4,977 units and 4%, its lowest ranking since February 2011 (#4). But the best performer this month is by far the BMW 1 Series. After beating its ranking record in October to reach #8 and staying there in November, it is up a further 3 ranks to bring this record to an outstanding #5 thanks to 3,196 sales and 2.6% share!
BMW is in great shape this month and places two models in the Top 6 (like Ford and Vauxhall!) for the first time ever in the UK: the 3 Series is back up one spot to #6, ranking within the 6 best-sellers in the country for the 5th time in 2012. The Mini is up 3 to #7, its highest position since last June. Brand-wise, Vauxhall takes the lead this month ahead of Ford while BMW is up 35% year-on-year to #3 and 10,175 units, passing Audi in the Full Year ranking in the process. Hyundai is up to #6 and Mini up to #10.

Why the UK market is growing in 2012
The Fiat 500 is one of the reasons why the UK market is euphoric this year…

Going against the general gloomy trend in new car sales in Europe this year (general market down 7%, Italy down 20%, France down 13% and Spain down 12%), the UK market has shown insolent year-on-year growth in every month of the year so far in 2012 except February, and confirms in October at +12% to 151,252 registrations. Year-to-date, the 1,771,862 new cars have found a buyer in the UK, a 5% or 83,823 units progression over 2011 and now on track to jump back above the 2 million annual units mark after dropping to 1,941,253 in 2011. Let’s get under the skin of this great performance…
…and the VW Up! is another reason.
The first interesting element to note is that the growth in 2012 reflects an improvement in private demand, while fleet demand has been stable. This means there is ‘real’ demand from ‘real’ consumers wanting new cars and is an indication that 2012′s growth is robust and not artificially boosted by fleet sales. The second main explanation for the health of the UK new car market this year is the incredible dynamism of the smallest car segment, the minis, up 52% year-to-date due to a bunch of new models being released recently: the VW Up! is #57 and the Skoda Citigo #140 while the Fiat 500 has its best year in the country so far at #11. The Supermini segment for its part is up 6%, with these two segments accounting for no less than 40% of the UK market right now!

Now that we have gone through the UK All-models ranking for September, let’s have a look at the 9 months 2012 year-to-date figures to extract longer-term trends. As a reminder the UK new car market is the only main one in Europe to enjoy year-on-year growth at +4% to 1,620,609 registrations. As for September, the ranking includes LCVs. The main event atop the year-to-date ranking are the 6th position (Passenger Cars only) of the Nissan Qashqai which, if maintained until year-end, would be the highest ranking ever reached by a Japanese model in the UK…
Land Rover Defender
Notice also the Mercedes C-Class up to #10, the Fiat 500 up to #11, the Peugeot 208 up to #52, VW Up! up to #57, Skoda Citigo at #140, Toyota GT86 at #206, Mercedes SL-Class at #256, Great Wall Steed at #259, Ferrari 458 at #261, Ford B-Max at #265, Chrysler 300 at #270, Lamborghini Aventador at #323 with 53 units and Lexus LFA at #367 with just one.
This time I have also decided to put the spotlight on premium British brands – some of them albeit now owned by overseas companies, to see how they fare at home. Land Rover places the Range Rover Evoque at #31 with 14,149 sales and 0.9% vs. #98 in 2011, the Freelander at #64 with 8,761 units vs. #43 in 2011, the Discovery at #76 with 7,005 sales vs. #69 last year, the Range Rover Sport at #80 vs. #70, the Land Rover Defender at #112 vs. #88 and the Range Rover at #127 vs. #100. So all models down except the Evoque…
Bentley Continental GT
As far as Jaguar is concerned, the XF holds itself well at #60 with 9,229 sales and 0.6% vs. #59 and 0.5% in 2011, the XJ is at #202 vs. #141, the XKR at #264 and the XK at #264. The Bentley Continental GT/GTC ranks at #222 spot thanks to 730 sales, with the Continental FlyingSpur at #299 with 105 units and the Continental SuperSport at #329 with 47 sales. Rolls-Royce only has two models on sale these days: the Ghost at #273 with 195 units and the Phantom at #315 with 65 sales.
Aston Martin has no less than 7 models in the UK ranking in 2012 so far: the V8/V12 Vantage is the best-seller at #266 with 292 units, followed by the DBS (126 sales), Virage (124), Rapide (84), Cygnet (61), DB9 (48) and finally the radical One-77 at #360 with 3 units sold in 9 months.
Lotus 2-Eleven
Morgan’s most popular model is the Morgan Plus 4 at #311 with 74 sales, followed by the 4/4 at #335 (35 units) and the Roadster at #339 (27). Lotus for its part sold 72 Evora (#312), 47 Elise (#330) and one 2-Eleven (#368).

Yes you can get excited, as you are about to discover very rare data! Like every Quarter there is an All-models ranking for the UK available. This time I can also share that ranking for September, a very important month as it corresponds to the 2nd licence-plate number change of the year after March and with 359,612 registrations it places the UK in the #1 spot in Europe. You can check out my original September 2012 UK article here. Bit of added value also: the ranking now includes all Light Commercial Vehicles, meaning the Ford Transit comes up at #7 overall with 7,928 sales and the Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa figures are slightly higher at 19,180 and 17,299 respectively.
2013 Ford Transit
We won’t dwell on the Top 10 as this is no new news (reminder: Mercedes C-Class at record #6). The big event is the appearance of the 2nd Chinese model to ever be imported into the country: the Great Wall Steed pick-up ranks #231 in September with 113 sales, adding up to 338 units over the first 9 months of 2012. The Steed’s September figure puts it in the vicinity of the Porsche Panamera, Honda CR-Z and Chrysler Voyager and well above the MG6, the only other ‘Chinese’ model on sale in the UK, down to #249 with 72 units this month.
Mini Countryman
Still tiny numbers for Great Wall but it will be fascinating to follow the Steed’s sales evolution over the next few months, as well as the entry of low-cost brand Dacia before the end of the year. Back to the top of the ranking, where the BMW 1 Series at #12, Toyota Yaris at #13, Nissan Juke at #16 and Honda Jazz at #17 all shine. There is a 5th Asian model in the Top 20: the Hyundai i10.
Further down, the Mini Countryman is up to an outstanding 26th position thanks to 3,517 units and 1% share, the VW Up! breaks into the UK monthly Top 30 at #29 with 3,394 sales, the Honda Civic is up to #33, the Jaguar XF ranks #52, the Skoda Citigo is up to #87, the Seat Mii #140, Toyota GT86 #141, Volvo V40 #159 and the Ford B-Max lands at #195 with 265 sales.

The Austin Mini ranked within the UK Top 10 up until 1981
* See direct links to the 32 UK Historical Data posts by clicking on the title! *
* You can also check the UK nameplates records here *
Thanks to Chris, author of the book “British Leyland: Chronicle of a car crash“, I can now share with you more detail on the UK best-selling models since 1965, date of the first available SMMT data. In particular, there is now at least a complete Top 10 models ranking from 1965 to 1979 and sales of each Austin, BMC, British Leyland, MG, Morris and Triumph model over the period.
The MGB peaked at 13,755 sales in 1973
While the UK new car market grew from 1.1 million units in 1965 to a record 1.7 million in 1979, the most striking event at the time is the imports share going from a mere 5.1% in 1965 to a huge 56.3% in 1979, its first time ever above 50%… Most UK manufacturers would then disappear during the eighties at the same time as foreign carmakers like Peugeot, Toyota and Nissan started manufacturing cars in the UK.
The Ford Cortina holds the all-time UK annual sales record at 193,784 units in 1979
As a reminder and thanks to Florian there is also at least a Top 15 models ranking from 1985 onwards, a Top 30 from 1995 onwards and a Top 100 for 1989, 1990, 1993, 1994 and 2004 up until now! This is very rare as info beyond the Top 10 is very hard to find… Plus from 2004 onwards every Monthly Top 10 is available, that’s over 100 consecutive months!
The Rover SD1 was #13 in 1978
Witness the last years of the Ford Anglia (Harry Potter’s car!) and the Austin Morris 1100, in the Top 2 from 1965 to 1971. Since 1972 or for the last 40 consecutive years, a Ford model has held the UK pole position: the Cortina (#1 for a total of 10 years), Escort (12 years), Fiesta (8 years) and Focus (10 years in a row from 1999 to 2008). The Cortina holds the all-time annual volume record in the UK with 193,784 units in 1979 whereas the Ford Sierra is the most successful model that never ranked #1, peaking at 175,911 sales in 1989.
Datsun Sunny
Discover how foreign models started to get a grip on the UK ranking, starting with the Datsun Sunny, first japanese car to rank within the year-end Top 10 in 1977 (#10) and the Datsun Cherry, #8 in 1981, a foreign model ranking record that would only be beaten 16 years later in 1997 when the locally produced Peugeot 306 ranked #7. The Nissan Qashqai, manufactured in the UK, is the only other Japanese car to rank within the year-end UK Top 10, in 2010, 2011 and 2012 when it broke the Japanese year-end ranking record at #6. All-in-all, only two foreign cars managed to break into the year-end UK Top 5: the Peugeot 206 at #4 in 2001 and 2002 when it sold a record 101,019 units, and the VW Golf at #5 from 2005 to 2010 and #4 in 2011.
The MG Maestro was #6 in 1983

UK: 50 electric BYD e6 to be shipped in for use as London taxis
October 27th, 2012

* See how the BYD e6 has fared so far in China by clicking on the title! *
Chinese manufacturer BYD has signed a Memorandum of Understanding to create London’s first fleet of all-electric minicabs with London taxi company Greentomatocars, previously known for its fleet of Toyota Prius. It is expected that 50 all-electric BYD e6 will be shipped to the UK early next year and will merge with the existing fleet of London taxis from the second quarter of 2013. The e6 has a range of 240 km and can be quick charged to 100% capacity in 20 minutes. All units will feature Wi-Fi and access to social networks like Facebook and Twitter, as well as a location map that users can check at any time.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: “It is my aim that London’s minicabs and taxis will be zero-emission by 2020, which will have a major impact on air quality. Encouraging more electric vehicles is a key part of this transformation, so it is great news that Greentomatocars has committed to operating 50 of these super clean machines from next year.”

SUOMEN AUTOTILASTO - CAR STATISTICKS IN FINLAND
Länsi-Euroopan häpeäpilkku
"Lähtötilanteessa myyntimäärä on suuri vähäisen autokannan vuoksi. Myöhemmin myyntimäärä ei enää hirveästi nouse varannon nousun vuoksi. Myyntimäärää sääntelee autokannan iässä tapahtuvat muutokset", Mankinen sanoo."Vuonna 2009 autojen osuus oli laskenut kahteen, kolmeen prosenttiin kotitalouksien kulutusmenoista", Mankinen lisää.
Vaikka Suomen henkilöautokanta onkin kasvanut, huomionarvoista on se, että ensi vuoden myyntimäärällä Suomen jo ennestään vanha henkilöautokanta edelleen vanhenee. Suomen henkilöautokannan keski-ikä on 11,6 vuotta. Keskimääräinen romutusikä on 19,3 vuotta. Paineet autokannan uudistamiseen olisivat kovat.
"Kuluvan vuoden jälkeen autokannan keski-ikä noussee yli 12 vuoden. EU:ssa vain Latviassa on meitä vanhempi autokanta. Suomessa on siis läntisen Euroopan vanhimmat autot", Kallio toteaa lakonisesti.
Suomen henkilöautokanta jatkaa ensi vuonnakin vanhenemistaan, sillä ennustettu 122 000 uuden henkilöauton vuosimyynti ei vielä riitä uudistamaan vanhaa autokantaamme. Siihen tarvittaisiin 140 000–150 000 kappaleen vuosimyynti.
